On January 10, 2021, Xavier University of Louisiana lost a beloved and treasured alumnus, Mr. Vidal Easton ’55.
Mr. Easton, a longtime supporter and member of the athletic department boosters’ club, was a staple at basketball games (serving as the clock operator at all home games until the end of the 2015 season). Mr. Easton often traveled out of town for regular season and playoff tennis and basketball games; he could, also, be seen providing pep talks to the men’s and women’s basketball teams and greeting the fans. Mr. Easton attributed his success in life to Alfred Priestly, long time Xavier University Football Head Coach, and to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.
His daughter, Dr. Michelle Easton ’93 &’97, recalls that her dad, on many occasions, reflected that he could never repay Xavier for the life lessons and experiences. According to Dr. Easton, that is why he volunteered to operate the clock for the basketball team for nearly fifty years, served as class agent for Homecoming, and financially supported Xavier University for decades. Mr. Easton loved Xavier and Xavier loved him back. It is in this spirit that the family of Mr. Vidal Easton has established an endowed scholarship that will allow Mr. Easton’s legacy to live in perpetuity. The scholarship will assist student-athletes from Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.
